I was very glad to see the tributes to Sol Solomon in the Monitor. It is the least he deserved. As an avid reader of My Turns in the Monitor, I had been following his writings. I was taken by his humanity, optimism and his approach to saving the world. In one column he mentioned that he was from the Bronx and of Jewish Greek heritage. Eureka, so was I.
His last name was the same of many relatives and I felt there had to be a connection. After much effort I tracked him down and we decided to meet. It turned out that in fact my great grandmother’s maiden name occurred frequently in his family. From that time we met many times for lunch, visited back and forth. He took me under his wing and this summer and I was invited to the family reunion in Bradford. I found Sol to be an incredible friend, father, grandfather and husband. He will be greatly missed. He was also generous to a fault.
