Recently Ward 5 Councilor Stacey Brown started a conversation about city spending on the Beaver Meadows golf course versus spending on the city pools in the summer. Councilor Brown and her supporters are approaching this conversation from the wrong direction. The purpose of the additional golf course spending is to generate revenue to cover the costs.
Additional spending on city pools will never generate revenue to cover the costs. In addition, the golf course attracts people from all over the state and beyond to Concord. These golfers then spend money to eat at local restaurants and buy products at local stores. This is especially beneficial for Penacook businesses given their proximity to the golf course. Concordโs city pools do not provide this same benefit for local businesses.
