There is a direct assault being launched against our entire public school system and it is happening right now. Yes, that’s right, the House has just passed a bill, HB 1393 now being considered by the Senate, which allows 25 people to submit a petition to radically cut funding to your public school. If the petition passes, the new reduced funding cannot be increased even if the town or community wants to restore it unless 3/5th of the town votes to rescind the decision. What happens if there is a low turnout at a town meeting or during a vote and the funding cut passes? Gone are the classes, the teachers, student activities, sports, science labs, special education programs, transportation, art, music, theater, class trips, and everything we hold dear in our town schools. Then how do we educate our children?
The proponents of the bill say school is merely welfare and should only be provided to poor children. They propose that parents get kids together and use online computer courses or home schooling to teach their children. This is the vision coming from our own Commissioner of Education Frank Edelbut. Imagine waking up and finding that your public school has been defunded by a minority of organized extremists at a meeting you didn’t know about or attend. It can happen. It did happen in Croydon. Don’t let Free State extremists destroy our school system. Call your state senator and the governor’s office and tell them to stop this bill.
