Mr. Cunningham’s recent My Turn (Monitor, 7/17) to be a very interesting take on what is certainly one of the most polarizing issues of our day. It is not my intent to enter into debate regarding either side of the issue, but to point out a factual error regarding the person of Jesus Christ. He, likewise, is probably the most polarizing persona in all of human history. And say what you will about him, while he was and is many things to many people, I can assure you that based on the biblical record, he was neither uneducated nor illiterate.
His well documented teachings in the four Gospels show he was very knowledgeable of the Jewish scriptures, whether or not he had a formal education in the sense we know it in the 21st century. And in Luke 4:16, it reads as follows: “And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read.” (ESV). I wholeheartedly encourage you, Mr. Cunningham, to do a bit more discovery on the person of Jesus Christ prior to making statements regarding him in your writings.
