During her tenure as majority leader in the NH senate, Senator Hassan played a major role in legalizing same-sex marriage in New Hampshire. She presented three versions of a same-sex marriage bill, one of which narrowly gained enough support to pass both chambers. In 2016, Hassan ran for the U.S. Senate and won. Sheโs serving with Jeanne Shaheen, another former governor who is now a U,S, Senator. When the conservative majority of the Supreme Court voted to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling and throw the battle over legalized abortion back to the states it โscaredโ men and women across the state.
Polls in New Hampshire and across the country indicate a surge in importance around the issue of abortion in the wake of the high courtโs monumental ruling. Democrats face historical headwinds. Senator Hassan was in the Senate chamber on January 6, 2021, for the 2021 United States electoral vote count. She describes that experience as one of the most dangerous of her life. Senator Hassanโs committee assignments include: Committee on Finance; Subcommittee on Energy, Natural Resources, and Infrastructure; Subcommittee on Health Care; Subcommittee on Social Security, Pensions, and Family Policy; Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions; Subcommittee on Children and Families; Subcommittee on Primary Health and Retirement Security; and Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs. The senator faces one of the most conservative opponents in many years. It is time for all of us to stand up and be counted as we face this historic election
