During her tenure as majority leader in the NH senate, Senator Hassan played a major role in legalizing same-sex marriage in New Hampshire. She presented three versions of a same-sex marriage bill, one of which narrowly gained enough support to pass both chambers. In 2016, Hassan ran for the U.S. Senate and won. She’s serving with Jeanne Shaheen, another former governor who is now a U,S, Senator. When the conservative majority of the Supreme Court voted to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling and throw the battle over legalized abortion back to the states it “scared” men and women across the state.
Polls in New Hampshire and across the country indicate a surge in importance around the issue of abortion in the wake of the high court’s monumental ruling. Democrats face historical headwinds. Senator Hassan was in the Senate chamber on January 6, 2021, for the 2021 United States electoral vote count. She describes that experience as one of the most dangerous of her life.
