An 18-year-old hiker who had gone off trail near the Everett Dam in Weare fell from a cliff Sunday and died of his injuries, according to New Hampshire Fish and Game department and Weare Police.
Colbee Cammarata-Hodgman, of Nashua, was climbing the cliff near the dam when he fell.
The accident happened shortly before 4 p.m. on Sunday, authorities said.
“The cliffs were off trail and not part of a designated climbing area. The individual climbing had no climbing gear or safety equipment,” Fish and Game wrote in a press release. “Despite life-saving measures attempted by Weare Fire Department personnel and Weare police officers, the individual succumbed to their injuries.”
Cammarata-Hodgman had to be rescued via “high-angle extraction” using “rope rescue techniques.”
“All first responders worked collectively to remove the young man from the area,” Weare Police said in a statement.
Fish and Game has for years been raising concern about the increasing number of rescues needed of unprepared hikers, a problem worsened during the pandemic. In September, the department took the unusual step of charging two hikers who had to be rescued by ropes when they went “exploring” on cliffs near Franconia Notch. They were fined $248 for reckless conduct and will probably have to pay some expenses.
