New Hampshire Antique Co-op presents From Ship to Shore: Maritime and Coastal Paintings from the 19th Century to Present, an exhibition and sale of paintings that captures the impressive beauty and intensity of the ocean, maritime harbors, working ports and coastal beaches.
The exhibition is on view from Oct. 15, through February 28, 2023.
For centuries, marine art has captured the power of the sea and stunning coastal scenes, as well as the craftsmanship of ships and busy maritime ports, reflecting the importance of overseas trade and naval power. This brought about the first career marine artists, whose techniques and traditions have been passed down even to the present day. From the 1800s and on, as European marine artists moved to America’s port cities and American artists worked to capture coastal ports and seascapes, the marine art genre flourished.
From Ship to Shore: Maritime and Coastal Paintings from the 19th Century to Present exhibition encompasses all three galleries at New Hampshire Antique Co-op. Visit the Focus Gallery on the first floor to view nineteenth-century artwork and nautical items. Then climb the stairs in the Tower Gallery, filled with Impressionist paintings of ships, harbors, seascapes and beach scenes. The exhibition extends to the Upstairs Gallery, featuring a collection of nineteenth-century maritime and ship portrait paintings.
Featured artists from the nineteenth century to the present include James Edward Buttersworth (1817-1894), William Stanley Haseltine (1835-1900), Robert Salmon (1775-1844), Antonio Jacobsen (1850-1921), Warren Sheppard (1858-1937), Harry Aiken Vincent (1861-1931), Arthur Vidal Diehl (1870-1929), Hayley Lever (1876-1958), Elliott Candee Clark (1883-1980), Tod Lindemuth (1885-1976), Aldro Thompson Hibbard (1886-1972), Emile Gruppe (1896- 1978), John Whorf (1903-1959), Brian Coole (b. 1939), William Davis (b. 1952) and more.
