In 2021, Gov. Sununu signed the most restrictive abortion ban in modern New Hampshire history into law. There are no exceptions for rape or incest, and health care providers could be punished with up to seven years in prison. The original bill, as signed by Sununu, had required ultrasounds for every abortion visit, regardless of having no medical necessity. That provision, removed since, is an example of Republican radicalism when it comes to preventing women from having the freedom to make their own reproductive decisions.
In addition to banning abortion after 24 weeks, Republican legislators have promoted other bills to restrict abortion and reproductive health. Examples: Allow any single person working in a health care setting, including pharmacies, to refuse to perform abortions or sell contraception if it violates their conscience (HB 1080). Allow bio-dads, including rapists, to prevent abortions, forcing women to carry unwanted pregnancies (HB 1181). These bills haven’t passed yet, but they’ll be back for consideration during the next legislative session. Voting for any Republican this fall is a vote against women’s autonomy. Vote Democratic to save reproductive freedom in New Hampshire.
