After six months of investigation into the double murder of Concord residents Steve and Wendy Reid, Concord Police Chief Bradley Osgood said he can take a sigh of relief.
Osgood and Attorney General John Formella announced that Logan Clegg, 26, of South Burlington, Vt., has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder, accused of shooting the Reids when they went for a walk in the woods in April.
“I tip my hat every day to these officers and investigators and my support staff,” said Osgood at a press conference Thursday in the Concord City Council chambers. “Today it brings a sense of relief to the extent that we’re here today. But this process continues.”
The charges are brought after a culmination of efforts from local, state and federal law enforcement, Osgood and Formella said. “Ultimately, it required collaboration with police in Vermont as well, where Clegg most recently resided.
“Mr. Clegg’s arrest is a significant step in this case, but it is only one step,” said Formella. “The charges against Mr. Clegg are mere accusations and he is presumed innocent by us until proven guilty.”
Now that formal charges have been filed, Formella and Osgood would not comment on the specifics of the case because of the potential criminal trial. More information, such as evidence and the investigatory work to charge Clegg, will be revealed in court, they said.
Clegg’s background is complicated. He was being held without bail at the Northwest State Correctional Facility in St. Albans. The charges there involved the theft of two handguns from a store in Logan, Utah. He then fled to Lisbon, Portugal and missed his probation hearing.
Vermont police obtained a search warrant and collected evidence from the woods where Clegg was staying and the personal belongings he had with him when he was arrested. Items were seized in the search, including a loaded Glock handgun which was believed to have been used in the Concord murders, according to court records.
According to a South Burlington police affidavit, Clegg had also purchased a one-way flight to Berlin, Germany scheduled to leave out of New York on Friday.
Formella and Osgood did not comment on these details. As of now, they reaffirmed that Clegg is the sole suspect in custody and they will continue with the investigation until the charges are resolved.
“I always say that Concord is the safest city in the safest state in the country,” said Osgood. “I still believe that today.”
