D-II Boys’ Soccer Tournament

No. 8 Merrimack Valley 3, No. 9 Kennett 0

Key players: MV – Gavin Wheeler (goal), Lucas Godoi (goal), Andrew Surprenant (goal), Eli Wormald (assist), Joey Olivera (assist), Logan Vong (assist), Trevor Simonds (shutout)

Highlights:  Olivera found Wheeler, who was able to slide the ball in the bottom corner past the Kennett keeper for a 1-0 lead that held through halftime. MV did a great job possessing the ball in the second half. Wormald dribbled the ball down the sideline and was able to put a shot towards goal that Surprenant was able to deflect into the back of the net. With about five minutes to play, Vong was able to find Godoi, who buried his shot in the back of the net. Simonds played well in keep and was able to get the clean sheet in Wednesday’s prelim. The Pride will play at top-seeded Kingswood in Sunday’s quarterfinal.

Coach’s quote: “That was a great team win tonight. The boys worked hard, and with the field being slippery it made it more difficult in the back. We handled the pressure well and I liked how we moved the ball around. We need to clean some things up and get ready for a great game against Kingswood.” – MV’s Ken Fuller
