A new and unique exhibition of photographs and paintings by local visual artists will open to the public on Feb. 3 as part of the Center for the Arts’ First Friday Gallery Stroll in New London.

This first of its kind special exhibit will feature paintings created by members of the CFA’s Art Café based on photographic works supplied by members of the Photography Café as part of a creative collaboration between the two groups.

The show, entitled “Where Painterly Art and Photography Converge,” will feature 15 paintings and one sculpture displayed next to the photographs used as reference images, all professionally finished and hung for public viewing for three months at Bar Harbor Bank and Trust on Main Street in New London.

“This is a really exciting and unique project for both groups of talented local artists,” CFA Visual Arts Coordinator Rick Stockwell said. “While the tools and techniques used by photographers are different than those used by painters, they are all creative tools that can be adapted in many ways to create fine art.”

Photography Café coordinator, Jay Fitzpatrick, and Art Café leader, Roger Wells, worked together to coordinate the efforts of each group’s participating members. Altogether, the exhibit will feature the works of 12 painters and four photographers who were involved in the project.

Fitzpatrick and Rogers will give short overview of the collaboration and the artists will explain their work and take questions. The artist presentations and Q&A will occur during the Gallery Stroll, both at 5:30 p.m. and again at 6:30 p.m.

The artists will be present to discuss their own work and give insight into the minds and talents of some of the best local visual artists for this collaboration.

The CFA First Friday Gallery Stroll opening receptions take place from 5 to 7 p.m. at Bar Harbor Bank and Trust on Main Street as well as four other New London Galleries including The New London Inn featuring work by Kim Schusler, New London Barn Playhouse Fleming Center Gallery for Contemporary Art featuring the work of Peter Anderson, Tatewell Gallery featuring Grace Scarlet, the first place winner of the NL Historical Society Art Competition, and Candita Clayton Gallery, and earlier in the day at Blue Loon Bakery featuring the work of Susan D’Appolino. All art is on exhibit during regular business hours.
