I read with interest Connor Drigotas’ opinion on the Free State Project and how we should not fear their vision of liberty for all. When I read the paragraph about not stealing “part of my neighbor’s hard earned money to secure funding” for public schools, it became clear the point he was really trying to make. The FSP is the proverbial wolf in sheep’s clothing. Since its inception almost 250 years ago, the United States of America and its citizens have walked the tightrope between individual liberty and the common good. Sometimes we’ve leaned towards one side or the other but we’ve managed to stay on the rope. Once we fell off and the result was a tragic civil war.

The FSP wants to push us off again. The libertarians want you to believe that they don’t want to hurt anyone or take their stuff. My husband was accosted by a group of libertarians at an event for Sen. Maggie Hassan and told to leave the state because they were “taking over.” And yet Mr. Drigotas claims we shouldn’t be afraid. It’s hard to walk a tightrope, but I would rather be up there balancing both individual freedoms and the common good. It should be both/and not either/or.
