The Center for the Arts is pleased to announce the next installment of the 2023 “Tapestry Tuesday” schedule of speakers. Programs include presentations by the CFA Literary Arts Guild and others sponsored by New Hampshire Humanities, and all are offered to the public on the third Tuesday of each month from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Due to renovations at the New London Inn, Tapestry Tuesday will be held across the street at Tracy Memorial Library. Reservations recommended at info@centerfortheartsnh.org
This year’s humanities talks are focused around three major areas of New Hampshire interest – women’s suffrage, the role of architecture in labor, and the experiences and places of native Americans in our history.
On March 21, Liz Tentarelli, president of the League of Women Voters NH (and a resident of Sutton), speaks on “Votes for Women: A History of the Suffrage Movement” focusing on key players from New Hampshire and the nation in the movement that culminated in the 19th Amendment in 1920.
The campaign for women’s right to vote was a long one, from the 1848 Women’s Rights Convention in Seneca Falls, New York to ratification of the 19th amendment in 1920. Who were the key players in New Hampshire and the nation? What issues and obstacles did they face? How did suffragists benefit from World War I in the final push for passage of the women’s suffrage amendment? Who was left out when women got the right to vote? Using historic photos and documents, Liz Tentarelli will guide us on the journey.
Tapestry Tuesdays offers these accredited speakers free of charge in the intimate setting of the New London Inn. Guests are invited to purchase food and beverages in advance of the talks or stay for dinner at the conclusion.
