The Granite State News Collaborative is a collective of local media, education and community partners working together to produce and share news stories on the issues that most impact our state.
We, the Granite State News Collaborative, are reaching out to you today to share our vision for a well-informed and empowered community. As trusted local journalists, we understand the critical role that news and information play in shaping our communities and the decisions we make.
The current media landscape presents challenges that cannot be overcome by individual news organizations alone. That is why we have come together as a partnership of more than 20 respected local news, educational, and community organizations.
Our mission is simple yet powerful: to ensure that reliable news and information reach every corner of New Hampshire.
In this era of news deserts and misinformation, our collaborative approach has proven to be a game-changer. By pooling our resources and expertise, we are filling the gaps left by shrinking newsrooms and limited coverage.
This partnership is not about saving local news outlets. It’s about saving the connections that local news fosters, and distributing to everyone information critical to local policy, spending, health, education, equity, justice and understanding of climate change to name just a few things.
How do we accomplish this?
First, we have established a robust news exchange where the partners share high-quality content that can be cross-published across various platforms. This ensures that the most impactful stories reach a broader audience and provide well-rounded perspectives on the issues that matter most to our communities.
Second, as an organization, the Collaborative facilitates coordination among the partners to ensure comprehensive coverage of major events and pressing issues. By working together, we can deliver in-depth reporting that goes beyond headlines, empowering our readers to make informed decisions and drive the change they want to see.
Third, the Collaborative’s team of investigative freelancers and data reporters is available to work with our partner editors. Through their in-depth research, data analysis, and investigative journalism, we can shed light on complex and critical matters that demand attention and accountability.
Additionally, we prioritize the diversification and replenishment of our newsrooms. By training emerging journalists and encouraging nontraditional voices to participate in the reporting process, we ensure a fresh perspective and a stronger foundation for quality journalism.
To sustain our efforts and remain independent, we rely on the generous support of our community.
Every dollar donated to the Granite State News Collaborative directly benefits our local news outlets, enabling us to expand our impact and continue serving our communities.
Together, we are making a real and tangible difference in our communities.
With your support and all of us working together, we have launched ambitious investigative series tackling crucial topics such as exclusionary zoning practices, proposed police reforms, equity in education, environmental justice, and more. We covered the pandemic, and the 2020 and 2022 elections together, providing comprehensive coverage in both English and Spanish, a first in New Hampshire’s history.
Collaborative reporters with partner editors generated projects that prompted city officials in Manchester to reach out to our data reporter for input on future zoning policy decisions and municipal and policy officials from across the state and country regularly download the public data and maps we’ve gathered and created.
By investing in our collaborative effort, you are ensuring that each of our partner outlets receives on average an additional 28 impactful stories per week from vetted local sources. This support is equivalent to adding nearly three staff reporters to their teams, strengthening their ability to serve you.
As community leaders, we have a responsibility to address the local news crisis head-on. We are in this for the long haul, working tirelessly to improve the lives of our neighbors and create a sustainable future for journalism in New Hampshire.
We invite you to join us on this journey by making a donation during NH Gives from June 6 to 7 (nhgives.org/organizations/granite-state-news-collaborative)
Together, we can ensure that our communities remain informed, engaged, and empowered to shape the future they deserve. Your contribution matters, and we are grateful for your support.
