Discussion Tuesday on whether Concord should join community power program

A public discussion will be held Tuesday about whether Concord should join the dozens of New Hampshire communities that have established community power programs, giving them more local control over electricity supplies.

The hearing is set for Tuesday, Oct. 3 at 6 p.m., in City Council Chambers, 37 Green St. Representatives from Canterbury and Keene, two communities that have already established the program, will be there to give information and answer questions. A second session has been scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 14.

Community power allows a New Hampshire town or city to purchase electricity supplies on the open market rather than relying on the local utility. Proponents say the program can help Concord meet its 100% renewable energy goals by giving the city the option of buying electricity from renewable sources, as well as possibly reducing rates.
