In response to the My Turn from Oge Young (2/9), I was the first midwife to be certified by the state of NH in 1981. I worked extensively with the NH Legislature to get our scope of practice in place. I also was the first chair of the NH Midwifery Council, the first ever midwifery board in the U.S. I have delivered 1,200 babies safely in their own homes in NH (and the USSR).

I agree with Dr. Young. The scope of practice for out-of-hospital birth in NH does prohibit breech and twin/ multiple births at home. This is for a reason. We out-of-hospital birth midwives are committed to attending low-risk births only to keep possible complications at a minimum. The aforementioned births are considered high-risk and not appropriate for an out-of-hospital birth. I believe that the NH midwives has a fabulous reputation and track record. They are very beloved by the citizens of NH. Call me old fashioned, but let’s not jeopardize this by seeking to allow “cowgirl obstetrics” and putting mamas and babies at unnecessary risk. All women deserve a safe birth, in the choice of their surroundings within reason, and closely and lovingly attended.
