An autopsy is scheduled late Monday morning for a Pelham man who was shot and killed Sunday night outside a home improvement store in Nashua, authorities said.

Shortly before 8:45 p.m., officers with the Nashua Police Department responded to the area of the Lowe’s home improvement store at 143 Daniel Webster Highway in Nashua.

The officers were following up on a report from Pelham police officers of an adult male Pelham resident who was armed earlier in the evening and was last seen leaving his residence, according to a joint statement from Attorney General John M. Formella and New Hampshire State Police Col. Mark B. Hall.

The statement said the responding officers encountered this male outside the store armed with a handgun.

“During the ensuing encounter, two officers ultimately discharged less-lethal munitions, and one officer discharged a firearm.  Life saving measures were attempted, but the male suffered lethal injuries and died,” according to the joint statement.

An autopsy has been scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday.

No law enforcement officers have been physically injured, and there is no threat to the public, authorities said.

The investigation by the New Hampshire Department of Justice and the New Hampshire State Police Major Crimes Unit into the officer-involved shooting is ongoing, and the identity of the individual shot will be released after his autopsy Monday.

“The identity of the officers using less lethal and deadly-force will not be disclosed until formal interviews take place; this is expected to occur sometime in the next five to 10 days. The exact circumstances surrounding this incident remain actively under investigation,” according to Formella and Hall’s statement.
