Calls for national unity are nothing new. From American leaders in times of grave crisis: the Civil War, Great Depression, World War II and others. We have heard similar calls from foreign leaders under similar circumstances, most memorably from Winston Churchill, Britainโs voice of determination during the darkest days of the war.
Far more commonly, it issues from authoritarian demagogues simply to consolidate their own power. We have heard such a call very recently. We are urged to come together to โmake America great again.โ Those who accept the invitation will fall in at the rear of the parade. Those of us who refuse may very well find ourselves marching in the front, at bayonet point.
