Governor Ayotte recently signed HB377, ending medical care for transgender adolescents in NH. But this bill will not turn transgender people cisgender. What it will do, and has already done, is convince families with trans kids to move out of state or get supportive medical care across the border. If trans individuals become desperate enough, they may turn to what is referred to as the “gray web” to source their medical needs, a dangerous option. If they aren’t able to get the care they need, studies show depression and self-harm will follow. Representative Lisa Mazur, prime sponsor, originally wanted those currently being treated to have to wean off their medication, in effect forcing detransition. She cried crocodile tears as she stated she only wants to keep children safe. But she may find her bill has the opposite effect. Our transgender friends and neighbors need us now more than ever. Stand with and speak up for them. Donate to organizations that support them. The Trevor Project has a 24/7 hotline. The Trump administration, in a typically cruel move, ended the LGBTQ option on the US 988 hotline. The NH Trans Youth Emergency Project helps with travel expenses to clinics in other states. 603 Forward and the ACLU fight for trans rights. Our GOP elected officials ignored the overwhelming testimony against this harmful bill, as well as the fact that every major professional medical, pediatric and psychological association supports transgender care. Don’t let hate and misinformation win. Trans rights are human rights.
