Social Security is 90 years old. This program is the bedrock of retirement and it helps us live happier, healthier and more financially secure lives. Some elected officials want to reduce the current Social Security benefits by a quarter to a third over the next decade. In New Hampshire, 334,000 people collect Social Security and 122,000 families are lifted out of poverty every month. Social Security helps us live and retire with dignity, offers crucial support to folks with disabilities and serves as a financial lifeline for families navigating the loss of a loved one. If Social Security benefits are reduced significantly in the next decade, many recipients will be unable to pay property taxes, buy groceries, afford health care, heat their homes or provide other basic necessities. Then what? Our country will not be stronger or better if we balance our federal budget by cutting Social Security benefits and create a large population of Americans living in peril. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link and cutting Social Security benefits creates a very weak link that will have a devastating impact. Keeping Social Security strong is a responsibility that falls on all of us! So, we must raise our voices. Our elected officials need to understand cutting Social Security benefits is not an option. Itโs imperative to ensure the strength of Social Security not just for another 90 years, but for generations upon generations to come.
