Donald Trump fired the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) because he didn’t like the low new job creation figures. He didn’t have any facts to show that BLS statistics were wrong since he fired her the day they came out. He couldn’t check the new jobs figures in a day. Trump liked the BLS when they announced good job growth. But when job growth went in the toilet he shot the messenger.

Trump similarly fired hundreds of NOAA employees and has proposed huge budget cuts for NOAA. The firings and budget cuts result from NOAA’s finding that climate change is real. Trump ridiculously has called climate change a hoax. We can see the climate changing around us. Animals and plants are migrating North as the climate change. Animals and plants don’t belong to a political party.

Facts are real. They should make a difference. Yes, people slant facts in their own favor. But that is different than totally ignoring what is plainly true. Firing an employee because they announce facts is horrible. It is awful to fire someone for telling the truth. Worse, it means that all other federal employees will have to ask themselves if they have to lie to keep their jobs.

Trump accuses other people of lying about new job figures because he is a liar and that’s what he would do. Welcome to George Orwell’s 1984.
