I found myself deeply disturbed by the recent actions the State of New Hampshire has taken to move the YDC abuse settlement process and funds under the control of a political appointee rather than an impartial, independent body. As former New Hampshire Supreme Court Chief Justice John Broderick pointed out last week, this smacks of partisanship and political maneuvering. While some state lawmakers have expressed concerns over the cost of the settlement, there should have been far more concern and oversight into conditions at YDC that allowed children to be savaged for years. When government and society at large lose regard for the most vulnerable citizens, God help us all.
