Too darn hot?

It’s hot. Erin went from Cat 1 to Cat 5 in 24 hours, the greatest of any Atlantic hurricane on record based on drop in central pressure before Sept. 1. Why?

Because we’re cooking ourselves with greenhouse gases which, by early 2030, will be warming us at twice the pre-industrial rate. Ignore your crazy uncle who says these gases don’t matter. The cause is the CO2 that comes from burning fuels that contain carbon โ€” coal, kerosene, oil and the like. We burn a lot. Too much.

What do we get from the GOP?

Crickets. Larry, Moe, and Curly put into DoE to stifle climate research. EPA killing the 2009 Endangerment Finding. The government suppressing the actual congressionally-mandated National Climate Assessment.

The heat this summer? Our weather station recorded a high of 97ยฐF on June 23; the heat index has risen over 85ยฐF 27 times this summer so far, with more to come. It isn’t the sun. It isn’t normal. But it’s becoming the usual.

There is a solution: burn less carbon. That’s it.

Don’t buy the argument that what we do locally or in the state has too little impact. Not true โ€” even small changes from many sources can accumulate to have significant and even dangerous effects.

Don’t let our GOP-run state government sit and do nothing. We need change. We need a government that addresses citizens’ needs at all levels. Let’s stop subsidizing fossil fuels and dump the politicians who vote that way.

Otherwise, it will only get hotter.
