A rescue team assisted a Massachusetts man out of Mt. Washington Tuesday after he experienced a medical event.
New Hampshire Fish and Game conservation officers were notified at around 4:30 p.m. that Tyler Viruet, 29, of Carver, Mass., stopped while hiking with a group and could not move due to an unknown medical event, according to a statement.ย
One person in the group was an EMT and relayed information to the officers. The EMT was advised to help Viruet get up and guide him along the Alpine Garden Trail to Mt. Washington Auto Road.
State park staff learned of the incident and left with extra clothing and medical supplies shortly after 5:30 p.m. Temperatures were around 40 degrees Fahrenheit, which felt even colder due to wind and light rain.
Staff made contact with Viruet and his group at 5:48 p.m. when he was assessed and helped to the Mt. Washington Auto Road. Once at the road, a conservation officer brought the group down the base of the mountain.ย
Viruet was checked out by Gorham Ambulance personnel and requested he be transported to a hospital by a personal vehicle.
The White Mountains are experiencing rapid weather changes this time of year, authorities said. With dropping seasonal temperatures and below-freezing wind chills, it will soon start to freeze and snow, especially above treeline. The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department encourages hikers to prepare for cold conditions and change their plans when weather conditions worsen.
