Republicans responsible for government shutdown
There is one simple reason why our government is now shut down. Republicans, who control the White House, the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives, would rather preserve the massive tax breaks they’re giving themselves and their billionaire buddies than protect the health care plans their constituents rely on.
Under the Republicans’ budget proposal, cuts in Medicaid would leave millions of Americans without health care, and millions more would face significantly increased premiums on their Affordable Care Act insurance.
Even though most Americans oppose these cutbacks to health care, Republicans have refused to work with Democrats to find a better way. They aren’t even trying to justify their own position on the merits, but instead have resorted to outright lying about what the Democrats are asking for. Don’t believe them! Despite Republicans’ disingenuous claims to the contrary, under the Democrats’ proposal undocumented immigrants would remain ineligible for Medicaid and Obamacare, as they have always been. Republicans hold all the strings of power in our government, and their choice to use that power to knock millions of people off of their health care plans, without even considering a compromise, is the cause of this harmful and avoidable shutdown.
