The Concord High School auditorium will be closed for the next few weeks while workers repair a portion of the ceiling that collapsed last month.
A five-inch piece of plaster fell down about two weeks ago, Matt Cashman, the district’s director of facilities and planning, told members of the Board of Education on Monday.
The auditorium, which has approximately 400 seats, is the district’s largest performance space. It hosts drama, music, and community events.
A public hearing on October 23 about the district’s plans to build a new middle school will now be held at 6 p.m. at the Abbot-Downing elementary school. The meeting was originally scheduled to take place at the auditorium at Concord High School.
“What I’m planning to do is repair a section of the building that we need to get at,” Cashman told school board members.
The work will involve installing scaffolding and will include an evaluation of the state of the entire ceiling, according to Cashman. He said he doesn’t anticipate the review will find broader issues with the integrity of the structure.
The piece of plaster that fell down was in the right-hand corner of the 4,200-square-foot space, beneath an emergency exit, Cashman said.
