A self-fulfilling prophecy
A self-fulfilling prophecy is best described as a belief or expectation that ultimately brings about its own fulfillment, often through a circular pattern where the expectation influences one’s actions, which in turn causes others to act in a way that confirms the initial belief, leading the person to also act in ways that support the prophecy. These prophecies can be positive or negative.
The above describes exactly what Trump and his administration are creating with their descriptions of a nation consumed by violence. And now, Trump has federally activated National Guard troops from Texas and Illinois preparing them to be sent to Chicago to protect ICE agents. Trump is using his administrations false perceptions of rampant violence in Democratic cities to justify the use of excessive military force in hopes that these actions will result in the exact violence that they imagine. As a result, it will allow Trump to justify the enactment of the Insurrection Act and send troops into any city he feels is a threat to him. Gov. Pritzker of Illinois stated that, “The broader goal, I believe, is the militarization of major American cities before the 2026 elections.”
Mr. Trump, by his actions, is clearly attempting to create the violence that he is imagining as a way of preventing free and fair elections and to subvert democracy. A self-fulfilling prophecy that gives Trump the justification that fulfills his authoritarian desires.
