Keep their story alive

The recent No Kings protest drew huge, spirited crowds rallying in both serious and carnivalesque fashion against our current administration’s fascist agenda. I’ve noticed that one rallying cry has been virtually absent from the protests I’ve attended — the plight of the Palestinian people.

Let’s not forget Trump’s complicity in the tens of billions of dollars sent to Israel in offensive military aid and high tech weaponry or the diplomatic cover he has been given in the last two years. Let’s not mistakenly think that this latest “peace agreement” has resolved the issue of the Palestinian right to self determination.

I often attend the Indigenous National Day of Mourning at Plymouth Rock, Mass., where there is a regular presence of Palestinian supporters in solidarity with Native Americans. Both have similarly experienced oppression through government policies of apartheid, ethnic cleansing, forced removal, starvation and genocide.

With profound appreciation for 50501 and many other organizations in the resistance movement, I urge them to remember that Palestinians are human beings and like every Israeli killed or held hostage they too have names. Let’s honor their story by holding signs for a free Palestine, and at future rallies continue to call for a just peace in the Middle East.
