HB 639 would strain NH resources
Imagine your city or town being notified that a crypto-mining facility will be built in your community — and that no one can stop it.
Crypto/Bitcoin-mining facilities require large amounts of electricity which causes increased electric rates for all consumers, strains the electric grid and reduces air quality. The facilities also require a significant amount of water for cooling; the water is later discharged into critical water bodies. According to one study, a single Bitcoin transaction uses enough water to fill a back yard swimming pool. New Hampshire has just experienced its driest summer on record and 2024 was the hottest. As of Oct. 23, more than 53% of the state was in an extreme drought and over the past few months many communities have experienced water restrictions.
On Oct. 30, the Senate Commerce Committee will decide whether or not to allow to move forward HB 639 which would enable crypto-mining facilities to override local control. Please contact Senators Daniel Innis, Denise Ricciardi, Tara Reardon and Donovan Fenton and urge them to ITL (OPPOSE as “Inexpedient to Legislate”) HB 639.
