Speaker of the House

Mike Johnson, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, has “recessed” the house since Oct. 1 at the start of the government funding impasse. He has refused to swear in the elected representative from Arizona against the law and his sworn responsibilities. He doesn’t seem to me to be the “Speaker of the House” but rather the Speaker of the Republicans in the House. If he were truly speaker, he would be working night and day, talking to all parties to craft a comprise to reopen the government.

I think past speakers such a Sam Rayburn, Tom Foley and Tip O’Neill would be working phones and talking to every member of the House to solve this problem as they put the country before party. They knew and cared that a government shutdown is terrible for all of us. It is time for Speaker Mike Johnson to show leadership in shaping a compromise that is acceptable to all.
