As I sit at my desk writing this, the first flurries of the season float to the ground outside my window. It’s hard to believe we’ve almost reached winter already. It feels like just yesterday I was writing about sunflower fields and harvest festivals.
During the coldest season of the year, I’m always in search of cozy activities for staying social and engaged in the community around me. It’s not always easy to find the motivation to drive somewhere in the dark (which feels like it sets in at 2 p.m. every day, even if I know that’s not the case). I’ve curated a list of activities designed to bring you out of premature hibernation so you can enjoy calm, relaxed atmospheres and hopefully make some good memories.
So here’s what we have coming up:
Canterbury has a treat in store for you this weekend. On Friday evening, the Canterbury Country Store will be holding the opening reception for its newest art exhibit: “BAKED.” The gingerbread houses of Beth Blair will be a staple feature of the show. The reception, held from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., includes freshly-baked gingerbread cookies, hot mulled cider and hard cider. For more information, visit https://canterburycountrystore.com/happenings-round-the-store/.
Spend part of your Saturday at the Concord Hospital Craft Fair, held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the hospital. Over 95 vendors will be in attendance, with baked goods, jewelry, wood crafts, paintings, quilting and fabric crafts, holiday floral arrangements, candles, soap, clothing, paper crafts and more available for purchase.
Bundle up and join the Concord Trails Subcommittee for a free, guided group hike at Sewalls Falls at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. The outing is a great opportunity to get outdoors, meet new people and see some beautiful sites in our city. For a preview of the trail, visit Map 10 at www.concordnh.gov/trails
If you have a craving for some music, check out “The Restless Beauty of the Beatles” at First Congregational Church in Concord on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. The performance features 12 Beatles songs, with performances by several musicians and The Jazz Sanctuary House Band, in addition to poetry reflections of Irish philosopher John O’Donohue as he explores “the restless beauty of the ocean.” The event is geared toward everyone, regardless of whether they’re church regulars or not. The church is located at 79 Clinton St. in Concord.
Those unable to attend in person can watch the concert live at https://www.youtube.com/concordsfirstchurch.
Enjoy the weekend!
