With the holiday season in full swing, there’s a lot to look forward to. Some of my personal favorite parts of this time of year include cheerful lights rendering the darkness a little less bleak, home-cooked meals with cranberry, apple and pumpkin flavors standing out strong and the overall spirit of togetherness that lasts until we ring in New Year’s.

As fall slides into winter, time seems to speed up. But I try to find ways to slow down, be it by walking in the woods, knitting a scarf, cooking soup on the stove or simply spending time with friends and family.

I caught some flurries while hiking Mount Sunapee last weekend. It’s only a matter of time until the first snow blankets the world white and we break out our ice skates and brew mugs of cocoa.

Enjoy every moment, along with these ideas for how to spend the upcoming weekend leading up to Thanksgiving.

If you’re looking to get outside and learn something new, consider joining the NH Audubon Society for a free birding outing at the McLane Center in Concord on Saturday at 8 a.m. The group exploration will bring participants along the trails at the Center, as well as help them identify year-round birds such as hairy woodpeckers, tufted titmice, and golden-crowned kinglets. All ages and birding experience levels are welcome.

Take some time to visit the Fantastical Flora and Fauna exhibit at the Epsom Public Library on Saturday. An opening reception will take place from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. to celebrate art centering around plants and animals. The artwork comes from The Highly Seasoned Artists, a collection of women who have met monthly since 2011 to grow their art together.

For a musical interlude, spend your Saturday afternoon at the Henniker Brewing Company for a performance by Northern Lite from 3-5 p.m. Sip some beer, bring some friends and relax!

Catch a performance of “The Addams Family Musical” at the Concord City Auditorium. Presented by the Community Players of Concord, the show will run from Friday through Sunday, so you have ample time to fit it into your weekend if you so choose. The Friday and Saturday performances will be at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday’s performance will be at 2 p.m. For tickets, visit https://communityplayersofconcord.org/addams-family-musical.

That’s all for now! Enjoy the weekend!
