Proud of our Somali families

In an inexcusable tirade of hateful speech, the president of this country called Somali people “garbage.” It is despicable that he would call anyone “garbage.” It only shows his appalling insensitivity, total lack of knowledge and downright racism. To counter his fallacy, let me tell you about the many Somalis living in New Hampshire that I have come to know over the last decade.

I have met strong, resilient Somali families with children who study hard in our schools. The teenagers, especially the girls, have proudly posed for photos, wearing their colorful traditional clothing. My friends cook and share amazing Somali food that adds to our culinary diversity. They have warmly welcomed me and my camera into their New Hampshire homes and have shared their cultural and religious traditions. They work hard for a living, often taking on more than one job and working together as a family team. I am honored to include New Hampshire’s Somali families as my friends.
