Business taxes in New Hampshire

There seems to be a belief in the Concord that if we lower business taxes, businesses will flock to our state. There are many considerations in addition to business tax that businesses must consider when relocating. For example, they need to think about their employees. Is there a well-trained pool or talent to choose from? How much time and cost will there be in bringing new employees up to speed? Is there a training program in the state to create qualified workers?

Then they have to consider the general quality of life for their workers. Are there good schools nearby for their workers children and good child care? Are there hospitals and shopping nearby? Is there entertainment options available? What about recreation options such as health clubs, skiing, boating, hunting and fishing for their employees.

I think it is a mistake for us to focus only business taxes as an enticement for businesses to move here. Sure it is important. But smart business people are going to look at the big picture before relocating. The things that businesses want, are the same things that all of us want.
