On Jan. 28, 1986, I was stationed at Eglin Air Force Base in Ft. Walton Beach, Florida. I was closely following the first teacher in space — from my hometown. When the rocket took off, I had my little desk radio tuned to the breaking news. When they announced the explosion, I was stunned. I ran out to my car where I had a small portable TV and watched the catastrophe in black and white, speechless. It was one of those days you remember forever.
