Concord, NH – Maria Anna Huston passed away peacefully after a short illness on December 28, 2025, at age 90, in Concord, New Hampshire. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend whose resilience and love will be deeply missed.
Born August 9, 1935, in rural Germany to Karl and Elisabeth Farber, Maria’s childhood unfolded during World War II. When her father was drafted, her mother cared for four young children amid bombings and displacement. The family fled east and later returned to West Germany after learning of the advancing Soviet army. Hidden with her siblings in a cattle car, Maria survived a perilous journey that shaped the quiet courage she carried throughout her life.
After the war, Maria worked, learned English, and loved dancing. A visit to her uncle in Edmonton, Alberta, led her to meet James Huston. They married in 1960, welcomed two sons in 1961, and settled in New Hampshire in 1968, where their family grew to six children.
Maria’s home overflowed with music and song. She and James were avid square dancers, and their children fondly recall summers on the blueberry fields of Crotched Mountain. Maria later earned a social work degree and devoted her career to helping children and the elderly.
After being widowed, Maria moved to Havenwood–Heritage Heights in Concord. She is survived by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, her sister Wilma, and extended family. A celebration of her life will be held in spring-summer 2026.
