ICE and immigration reform

No question in my mind that the aggressive, escalatory and arguably criminal behavior on the part of some ICE agents, as well as Noem, Miller and Bovino, does not belong in America. Remember that ICE is enforcing laws that Congress passed and has been cruelly negligent in reforming to reflect current reality.

I see some low-hanging fruit that might move us in a better direction. First, add staff to the offices responsible for processing asylum claims and eliminate the backlog in issuing green cards, residency approvals and work permits. The clogged pipeline is creating misery for too many people through no fault of their own. Next, create a pathway to legal residency for anyone brought to the U.S. as a minor before Dec. 31, 2020. Then, end detention to all in our communities who have families, hold stable employment and have not committed felonies.

These steps will not address all the immigration issues and challenges we are facing, but they are a start and will give millions hope. Contact your legislators and add your own suggestions.
