For twelve hours, Nathaniel Kay assaulted and restrained his elderly parents inside their home in Belmont, and the ordeal ended when his father convinced him to allow a call for an ambulance as his mother’s condition was worsening, according to police.
Kay, 42, has been indicted by a Belknap County Grand Jury on one count of second-degree assault and two counts of criminal restraint, the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office.
Kay’s 82-year-old father called 911 at around 5:20 a.m. on Oct. 15, initially reporting that two people had fallen down the stairs at their Cotton Hill Road home, according to court records.
He told dispatchers he was in the kitchen while his 77-year-old wife was upstairs and that he did not know whether she was conscious or breathing.
While being transported in the ambulance with his wife, emergency responders learned their injuries were not the result of a fall.
Their son had “kicked and punched them in the head and upper body multiple times” over the course of several hours, according to court documents. Kay had also tied his parents with a clothesline and dragged them through the house, according to the arrest affidavit.
Kay’s father placed a call to 911 two to three hours after his son had stopped physically assaulting them.
Court documents say he used his hands and a rope to strangle his father.
Both victims suffered significant injuries.
Police reported that the father sustained a broken nose and broken ribs. Kay’s mother suffered a traumatic brain injury and was intubated in the ambulance before being transported to Concord Hospital, where medical staff prepared her for surgery.
The case was investigated by the New Hampshire State Police Major Crimes Unit and the Belmont Police Department.
Kay is scheduled to be arraigned in Belknap County Superior Court on Feb. 27 at 8:30 a.m.
