In the past week, most of the conversations I’ve had have begun with snow — how many inches we’ve gotten, how cold it is, when the flakes will start again.

Don’t get me wrong: I love winter. I relish the serenity of a world blanketed in white ice crystals, the way everything gets quiet and still. But at the same time, I miss sunshine and the burst of energy it gives everyone. I miss the feeling of warmth on my skin and the sing-song of birds perched in trees. I miss picnics on the State House lawn and strolling through the grass at White Park.

I miss conversations that don’t begin with the weather (which is ironic, considering how I’ve chosen to begin this column).

I try to stay as busy as I can in the winter, as if being on the move will somehow keep me warmer. It is nice to remember that socialization doesn’t cease when the temperature dips below 32 degrees. So, even though we’ve all been fighting our way through winter, Arts Ahead aims to inject a degree of fun into your week so that, hopefully, you get out with your loved ones or take yourself on a date or find new ways to connect with community.

Because that’s what it’s all about — togetherness. We need that in every season, and winter’s no exception. In that spirit, here’s what to look forward to this weekend:

The Hopkinton Town Library is hosting a craft swap this weekend. People began dropping off craft supplies last week, and you don’t need to have contributed to come to the event. Stop by on Friday from 10:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. or on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. The library is located at 61 Houston Drive in Contoocook.

While you’re in Hopkinton, head to the Contoocook Cider Company for live music by Alex Cohen Acoustic, beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Located in the ground floor of Gould Hill Farm, the cider company serves up flights of cider, pizzas and snacks, with board games available for playing.

That same evening in Concord, The Barley House will host a performance of Dueling Pianos at 7 p.m., so “get ready to sing, laugh and party.” Tickets can be purchased online in advance on Eventbrite.

Then, on Sunday, the New Hampshire English Country Dance Society will hold its monthly dance at the Howard Recreation Center in the Gallen State Office Park in Concord. Rooted in the history of English court dances from centuries ago, these dances have evolved with modern elements. Before the music begins, participants will have the opportunity to learn the dance. The event is accessible to people of different experience levels, with an introductory session at 2:30 p.m. Dancing will happen from 3-6 p.m.

Have a fun weekend!
