Trump’s temper tantrum
So, after the President didn’t get his way with the Supreme Court, he threw a temper tantrum like a toddler. He then inferred that the justices were motivated by foreign interests in their decision. Basically, a polite way of calling them unpatriotic, traitorous foreign agents. Interestingly, two of those justices who ruled against the tariffs were nominated by and sworn in by Trump. Go figure!
Anybody with half a brain knew what the President did with tariffs was unconstitutional.
Here are some key points from the written opinion of the Court:
• “That ‘”lack of historical precedent,” coupled with the breadth of authority’ that the President now claims, suggests that the tariffs extend beyond the President’s ‘legitimate reach.’”
• “The President must point to clear Congressional authorization to justify his extraordinary assertion of that power. He cannot.”
• “The President lacks inherent peacetime authority to impose tariffs”.
• “The Government thus concedes, as it must, that the President enjoys no inherent authority to impose tariffs during peacetime.”
The question I have is, will the President do what he’s done with other court rulings and just ignore them? Probably. It would be nice if the “adults” in Congress would act like they truly matter and are not just cowardly lap dogs for Trump. We live in wacky times, likely to get worse because Republicans spout a false narrative of what patriotism is.
