Hopkinton High School students walked out of school Thursday afternoon and headed downtown with a message in the form of big signs to protest ICE.

The group split in two on either side of the intersection on Main and Maple streets in the village center. Organized by senior Isabella Reed, they wanted to make their voices heard.

“I really wanted to do something, to spread awareness of the problems that are happening and to also let (everyone) know that people here are safe with us,” she said.

Hopkinton students made their own signs and held them high in Hopkinton protesting current political turmoil surrounding ICE and the Trump administration.

It started with a conversation with some friends, and as they saw other student movements at bigger schools, they decided to band together as well.

“I feel like it’s just so violent and there’s way better ways to go about stuff like this,” another student, Camryn Curran, said. “Innocent people should not be getting injured and murdered over it.”

Students weren’t alone downtown either, as some older members of the community also joined them in front of the Witching Hour Coffee & Provisions.

One woman, Beth Taylor, saw the students as she drove past and decided to join.

“Democracy is a fragile thing and I believe we have to fight for it,” Taylor said.
