The CHARLIE Act is harmful for our public schools

The CHARLIE Act (HB 1792) is named after Charlie Kirk. The proposed legislation, which has already passed in the New Hampshire House, is a lot of hot air. Even the name behind the acronym (Countering Hate and Revolutionary Leftist Indoctrination in Education) is misleading, cruel and divisive. Smoke and mirrors.

Some of the leaders who are in favor of this bill want their followers to be upset because they claim that educators are “indoctrinating” students to be “un-American” and accepting of other students and empathetic with those who face adversity and oppression. What is the “hate” in that? I think Rep. Matt Coker had it right when he pointed out that this bill is an attempt to enforce far-right indoctrination through statute. So, who is really the one indoctrinating? It’s the leaders trying to pass a bill to force educators to stick to only neutral and “patriotic” curriculum.

The bill seeks to prohibit critical thinking in the form of critical race theory, worldviews and LGBTQ+ ideologies, and is in favor of neutral or “patriotic” indoctrination. The bill oppresses education and educators, discourages objective learning, advocates for student ignorance and is harmful toward minority students.

I am opposed to this bill because it does not support our schools, educators and children. If public schools can’t teach an appropriate curriculum without fear, then the schools will be forced to disservice the students by providing a compromised education.
