Deaf and Hard of Hearing Expo
As we get older, many of us will start to lose our hearing. We will be in denial as long as we can, like my 101-year-old dad, who insisted he had no hearing loss until one day a hearing aid magically appeared in his ear. Suddenly we could communicate a whole lot better.
Hats off to Northeast Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services for hosting an expo last week. Over 40 exhibitors shared the latest technology, programs and services. There are so many ways you can communicate with your deaf and hard of hearing friends and family, and they were all on display at the expo.
There were pocket talkers to amplify your voice from across the room and doorbells and fire alarms that alert you with light. Sorenson explained how to go on Zoom and have an interpreter join you for free so you can to talk to your deaf friend. At the 911 booth you could find out how to register your medical information in advance so when the rescue squad shows up they will know if you are deaf or hard of hearing, have a heart condition, diabetes or anything else to help them get a jump on your care. Want to learn ASL? You could find out where to take a class.
Thank you NDHHS! Can we do it again next year? Meanwhile, if you have hearing loss and questions, give them a call at 603-224-1850, video phone 603-968-5889 or email them atย info@ndhhs.org.
