Historical odds favor Pope Leo
Does anyone else see the irony and hypocrisy? The founder of Christianity was killed by members of the Roman Empire nearly 2,000 years ago. The Church remains, but the Roman Empire does not.
Now we have a leader whose followers compare him to Jesus, or he does it himself, when he is actually doing things more associated with the brutalities of the Roman Empire.
Some of those followers donโt seem to realize how it ended for some Roman emperors. Despite shaping his image as a war hero, threatening his Senators and having them beat up, it was Julius Caesar’s closest allies who finally ended his reign, not the thousands of average Roman citizens, or those conquered by him. Although Pontius Pilate was a governor under Emperor Tiberius decades later, Caligula took over from Tiberius, and Caligulaโs reign didnโt end well either. Even today, Caligulaโs name is often synonymous with debauched behavior, excessive self-indulgence and abuses of power.
So to see our current national leader at odds with the leader of the Church founded based on the teachings of Jesus, it is strange indeed. He has crossed way more Rubicons than Caesar ever could have dreamed of, and given Caligula a run for his money in a number of ways. Future generations of children will neither thrive nor survive the current level of hate, violence and division we are currently living in. Only a belief system based on peace, love and forgiveness can ensure humanity’s survival. Historical odds favor Pope Leo.
