Downshifting 101
Downshifting! Remember this word. Digest it. It is a description of the tax strategy of the Republicans. It is what is making life unaffordable in your communities and driving many people out of their homes.
What is downshifting? It’s simple, the Republicans claim that they are tax cutters. Governor Ayotte proudly announces that she is cutting more taxes. However, she’s not talking about you and me. She’s talking about cutting taxes for the super-wealthy and the corporations. To offset those cut in taxes for the well-heeled, the Republican legislature cuts funding for needed programs, services and school funding. This downshifts the burden to your local community.
Meanwhile, the Governor and the Republicans create even more giveaways to the rich like expanding the Education Freedom Account, putting money in the pocket of rich families to help pay for their children’s private school costs. After they downshift costs to your town, what must your town do to continue to provide needed services? Raise your property taxes.
The Governor and Republican legislature are betting that you won’t direct your anger for rising taxes at them but at your local city council and school board instead. Don’t be fooled. Republicans are indirectly raising your property taxes through their strategy of downshifting. If you want to relieve your tax burden, vote in Democrats who will work to adequately fund education and state services and relieve your tax burden.
