How everyone can help prevent cancer
Hello, my name is Penelope Johnson. I am an eighth grader at the Beech Hill School. When I was young, my grandmother was diagnosed for the first time with cancer. I don’t remember much of that time, but I do remember one day we were outside and she had all her hair cut off. She fought through it and survived. Then again in 2024, she was diagnosed for the second time. I remember my mom crying, and my family felt different. At Christmas, she cut off her hair. She passed in 2025. But I will never forget how hard it was for her to have to cut her hair off. She looked normal, and acted as normal as she could. But then she looked different, and everything never felt the same.
I know how hard it is for someone who knows a person with cancer, and I hope that I will never know what cancer is like. The reason I’m writing this is to show how bad cancer is and how an average person can help. For example, if you donate to a place that does research or a support system for people who have cancer or know someone who does, you can help. If you are healthier, this can help you too. Cancer can still happen without doing that but it can help prevent types of cancer. There are over 200 types of cancer, and because of things like this almost 70% of people survive.
In conclusion, many people struggle with cancer, and many survive because of donations to research centers. Everyone can help.
