Bike safety
Thanks to Paul Susca and Amanda Gourgue’s My Turn. You brought safety issues to light, were polite but truthful about the inappropriate comment from the House Transportation Committee chair and gave the community information about what the BikeWalk alliance is doing.
As someone who lives on my bike in most nice weather, I appreciate the drivers who are polite, aware and considerate but have also been shouted at (“ride on the sidewalk”!) and almost gotten run over. Half of the year I live in Summit County, Colorado, where the entire county is connected by a bike-friendly recreation path. I never have to face dangers from anything worse than a stray pup off leash or a pedestrian with earphones who can’t hear my “on your left” shout as I whiz by.
I know it’s unrealistic for Concord to imagine such a system, although there are closer cities โ like Burlington, Vt. โ who have shown more willingness to a truly bike-friendly community. Let’s all keep our eye on the bills in the house that will increase awareness and make Concord a truly safe place to chose not to drive a car.
