When I first moved into my apartment, I brought with me aloe plant clippings from my great aunt. She had repotted some spindly offshoots and bestowed my family with several relatives of her original plant.

Over time, I accumulated a monstera tree, which I affectionately named Lenny. I took in a spider plant after my neighbors were offering them up. My kitchen windowsill is now perpetually lush with pots of all sizes featuring verdant growth.

Still, I’m not a natural plant mom. There are times when Lenny droops or his leaves grow brown despite my best efforts to keep him well watered and sunlit. But I troubleshoot each obstacle, remaining steadfast in my desire to someday have a green thumb, to know what my plant needs without five rounds of guessing.

It’s been a good learning curve for me. Taking care of plants has taught me patience. I’ve honed my observational skills and deepened my appreciation for the inherent resilience of nature.

And I’ve acquired a penchant for buying more plants.

This weekend, stop by Brookford Farm for its annual plant sale, featuring organic seedling and bedding plants, soil from Vermont Compost, an open barnyard with plenty of animals to meet, a newly stocked farm store and samples of some fun fresh farm products. The sale has been ongoing since the start of the month, and it’s not too late to take advantage of spring planting season. Head to the farm anytime between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. either weekend day (or Friday, if you’re feeling extra fun) to enjoy the offerings!

There are also some awesome music options this weekend. Backwoods Metal Fest is happening on Friday and Saturday at Henniker Brewing Company.

“This music festival brings together some of the best heavy bands from New England and beyond. Two days, two stages, 24 bands, so many good times,” the event description says. Visit https://hennikerbrewing.com for the full schedule of performers. Looks like a great time all around!

Rollins Park will also become a music venue on Saturday for Synthfest, happening from 5-8 p.m.

“Ever heard plants play music? With the right equipment they can!” the description says. “Synthfest 2026 is the third annual event bringing live electronic music to Concord. There’s plant music, multiple live electronic music artists and more. Join us at the Rollins Park Gazebo for a free evening of music from Bosey Joe, Greenleader and Hyponova.”

If you’re in the mood for a sip of something in the midst of all the music, Wine on Main will have a free wine tasting in partnership with Ruby Wines from 1-4 p.m. on Saturday.

The weather’s not looking the best for the weekend, but don’t let that stop you from having fun!
