Plan ahead for summer heat
I am a family practice doctor practicing in Milford, and I know that this is a good time to think about what to do during the days of extreme heat that we will surely have this summer.
Populations that are very vulnerable to heat illness include the elderly, the very young , those who work outside, people with underlying medical conditions and women who are pregnant. We should make sure that our outdoor workers have shade, extra breaks and lots of water. If you are attending an outdoor activity, have plans for lots of water, places to go with shade or air conditioning and be willing to leave outside events early if it seems the heat is too much.
Heat affects us by causing headache, lightheadedness, fatigue and nausea. Some of us will have these symptoms much easier and at much less heat then others. For good tips on avoiding heat illness go on www.nhpha.org. Also, calling 211 in New Hampshire will connect you with Department of Health and Human Services and trained personnel can assist people to find help that might be needed during a summer heat wave. Lets start now to have a plan to protect ourselves and others from heat illness this summer.
