Chichester, NH – Marguerite “Mardy” Wales (Stoddart) Hammond Friary, 82, of Chichester, NH, formerly of South Conway, NH, passed away peacefully on June 1, 2026, surrounded by her family.
She was born on November 15, 1943, in Detroit, MI, the daughter of the late David Ayars Stoddart Sr. and Dorothy (Cooper) Stoddart.
Mardy attended many schools growing up, as her childhood involved frequent moves due to her father’s work with Ford Motor Company. Her school years included cheerleading, softball, flute, and piccolo. She once performed the lead piccolo part in her high school band’s rendition of The Stars and Stripes Forever. Mardy attended Hobart and William Smith College in New York, where she met her lifelong friend, Joan Wallen.
Her career included bookkeeping for Young Children and Family Services at North Conway Memorial Hospital. She eventually became the proprietor of Antiques and Collectibles Barn in North Conway, NH. She remained there for several years before retiring to Chichester, NH.
Mardy loved skiing, gardening, reading, knitting, antiques, and travel. Her years on a small farm in South Conway brought her deep joy, where she cared for all sorts of farm animals. Her later years in Chichester included volunteer work at the Chichester Town Library. She also supported 4-H organizations for many years, with special attention to Carroll County.
Her family remembers her for her gentle presence, nurturing spirit, quiet generosity, and famous chocolate chip cookies. She was a thoughtful and kind friend to many.
Mardy was preceded in death by her first husband, Richard C. Hammond Jr.; her second husband, William F. Friary; her parents; and her brothers, David A. Stoddart Jr. and David A. Stoddart III.
She is survived by her two sons, Bradley C. Hammond and his wife, Debbie, of Newington, CT, and Todd R. Hammond and his wife, Marlene, of Chichester, NH.
Her grandchildren include Samantha, Brett, and Jodie Hammond of Newington, CT and Richard Hammond and his wife, Hailey and David Hammond all of Concord, NH. Her great-grandchildren, Carter and Lily Hammond, also brought her immense joy.
A memorial service will take place on Sunday, June 14, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 21 Centre Street, Concord, NH.
Burials will occur at a later date in North Conway, NH, and Pembroke, MA.
